Redesigning food package to prevent food wastage

In an era where sustainability is paramount, our redesign project seeks to create an innovative food packaging solution inspired by the rich traditions of Asian culture. This approach emphasizes the use of natural materials and eco-friendly practices, reflecting a deep-rooted commitment to minimizing waste and maximizing resourcefulness. Our initial research included surveys and workshops, but we discovered that our insights were limited by the cultural backgrounds of participants, primarily Swedish. This highlights the need to consider cultural nuances—especially the significance of rice consumption in many Asian societies—when developing packaging solutions intended for diverse markets.

Understanding the interplay between culture and consumer behavior is crucial for effective design. We explored the potential of cylindrical packaging, which can influence portion control through the perception of depth, thereby encouraging healthier consumption habits. However, the effectiveness of this design will vary across cultures, necessitating further testing to validate our hypotheses.

In many Asian cultures, practices such as using banana leaves for food preparation and serving underscore an ingrained respect for sustainability. This cultural context facilitates a greater acceptance of biodegradable and edible packaging solutions. Conversely, European consumers may approach these innovations with skepticism, influenced by historical reliance on plastic and synthetic materials. Shifting perceptions in these markets may require significant educational efforts to foster acceptance of sustainable alternatives.

Additionally, we recognize the importance of conducting a thorough Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impact of our packaging solution. Questions surrounding the carbon efficiency of cultivating plant materials for biodegradable packaging versus traditional plastic production must be addressed. As we navigate these complexities, our aim is to retain the value of both the product and its packaging, ensuring that our solution is not only innovative but also sustainable.

This project stands at the intersection of culture, behavior, and sustainability, seeking to create packaging solutions that resonate across diverse markets while championing eco-friendly practices.
